The Challenge
Industries increasingly require gas sensing systems that deliver high precision, regulatory compliance, and flexibility across a wide range of operating environments. Traditional gas measurement solutions are often expensive, application-specific, and difficult to adapt to changing requirements. At the same time, European regulations are becoming stricter, while gas compositions in industrial, agricultural, and medical applications are growing more complex.
Objective
The PHANTOM project aims to develop a next-generation photonic gas sensing platform that enables modular, scalable, and cost-effective gas measurement solutions. By combining advanced photonic technologies with a plug-and-play system architecture, PHANTOM supports the rapid configuration of sensing systems for multiple gases and diverse industry applications.
The strategy
PHANTOM combines modular hardware building blocks, photonic sensing technologies, and scalable system design to create a flexible platform for next-generation gas detection.
Modular & Flexible Platform
PHANTOM is built around a modular plug-and-play architecture that allows gas sensing systems to be configured using interchangeable components such as lasers, detectors, and measurement cells. This approach makes it possible to tailor each setup to specific application requirements while reducing development complexity and improving adaptability.
High-Precision Photonic Detection
By leveraging advanced photonic technology, PHANTOM enables gas detection at unique wavelengths with high sensitivity and precision. This improves performance in both pure and mixed gas environments, supporting applications where measurement accuracy and reliability are critical.
Multi-Gas Sensing Capability
Through the use of broadband and wavelength-sweeping lasers, PHANTOM enables the detection of multiple gases with a single sensing platform. This expands system functionality while reducing the need for separate dedicated measurement solutions, making the technology more versatile and cost-efficient.
Compact and Scalable Architecture
PHANTOM is designed to reduce both system size and cost without compromising performance. Innovations such as photonic spirals and scalable platform architectures enable compact implementations that remain suitable for a broad range of industrial and commercial use cases.
Application Potential
PHANTOM is designed for use across multiple sectors, including high-tech and semiconductors for multigas process control, agriculture and horticulture for greenhouse monitoring, livestock farming for ammonia detection, medical diagnostics for breath analysis, and the chemical industry for leak detection and safety monitoring.
Forward Momentum
PHANTOM, co-funded by the European Union, creates a smarter path forward for gas sensing by combining precision, modularity, and scalability in a single platform. Its flexible architecture allows new applications to be developed quickly by upgrading or adding specific building blocks, reducing time-to-market and opening new opportunities across multiple industries. By making advanced gas sensing more adaptable and cost-effective, PHANTOM supports broader adoption and long-term market growth.
