The Challenge
The process industry faces increasing demands for cost-efficient and safer maintenance solutions. Traditional approaches often fall short in addressing these challenges, creating a need for advanced robotic systems to enhance efficiency and safety in maintenance tasks. Developing innovative robotic applications is key to addressing the growing demand for over 50 concrete solutions.
Objective
The Smart Tooling project, part of the Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland program, aims to strengthen the process industry through robotics innovations. The project focuses on developing advanced robotic systems for maintenance tasks, fostering collaborations between SMEs, large enterprises, and research institutions to drive technological advancements.
The strategy
The Smart Tooling project unites industry leaders, service providers, and technical experts to develop cutting-edge robotic solutions for various maintenance applications. These efforts are organized into clusters, addressing challenges such as inspection, cleaning, and autonomous operations.

Inspection Cluster
VTEC Lasers & Sensors, in collaboration with Serenity and ID Tec, focuses on developing lightweight crawlers for tank inspections. These robots operate under challenging conditions, including chemical exposure, high temperatures, and high pressures. VTEC provides expertise in sensor technology and software, enabling precise navigation and data collection.

Cleaning Cluster
This cluster aims to create a robot capable of detecting, loosening, and removing contamination in confined spaces and open surfaces. VTEC contributes its sensor technology and communication expertise, while Serenity supports data acquisition and processing. Partner organizations such as Mourik, Buchen, and Group Peeters provide domain-specific knowledge and assist in testing the robot.
Funding Recognition
The Smart Tooling project receives financial support from the Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland program, co-funded by the European Union. This program promotes cross-border collaboration to enhance innovation and sustainable development within the region.
Forward Momentum
The Smart Tooling project represents a leap forward in integrating robotics into the process industry. By fostering collaboration between SMEs, large companies, and research institutions, the project aims to create transformative maintenance solutions that improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
